Retained vs. Contingent - What's the difference?
There are multiple reasons to engage a search firm on a retained basis over a contingent search. Contingent searches serve their purpose and are sufficient for non-critical roles that do not need dedicated focus and vacancies are nondisruptive to the organization. Retained Retained searches offer a level of commitment and dedicated focus to an open position that a contingent search is unable to provide. Our retained searches provide a comprehensive, tailored, and dedicated approach to our search projects. With a retained search, our client (company) has paid a portion of the fee upfront, becoming a priority for TEM above all contingent roles. TEM has a dedicated system for our process and prioritize time for dedicated focus. Our efforts do not deviate from the search until an offer letter is in hand. Your search is the priority! Retained searches don't rely on sourcing partners and job ads to identify candidates. At TEM, we take a more strategic approach to our retained searches; we use a market mapping system, starting with 50-70 potential candidates, including competitors, and commit to a minimum of 5 outreaches per candidate. That's just where we start! When should you consider a retained search? - A confidential search - A challenging skillset or role with very low unemployment rates - Time sensitive roles - When you are seeking the top 5% of the market Contingent A contingent search is a search requires no financial commitment from the client (company) to engage the search. Did you know? Most contingent recruiters are working 15-20 searches at a time, with client priority shifting daily as new roles come in. The Executive Movement accepts only 3 retained searches at a time. Most contingent searches include a posted job ad, and an average of a one-time outreach/in-mail through a sourcing partner like a LinkedIn recruiter.
